“I read through the January 2026 Bulletin recently, and couldn't help picking up on George Robson's article about long serving employees. This set me thinking and I checked with my own contribution about Margaret Widdas (Aunty Margaret, as our family knew her) and note that she was at St Bees from 1936 - 1984, which adds up to 48 years - a truly remarkable achievement!

I do know that she and nurse Appleyard were great buddies and spent a lot of time chatting about all sorts of things. They were both very keen gardeners and no doubt compared notes as gardeners do.
Because Robert and David (my brothers) were at school there before me, mum and dad knew her quite well, and I do remember sitting with them in nurse's sitting room listening to them chatting over a cuppa. This must have been some time in the mid/early 50s.”
